Most Common Injuries Series - Part 3 : Runners

This is part 3 of our “Most Common Injuries” series. Today’s focus – Runners 🏃

An epidemiology study of marathon runners (Fredericson & Misra, 2007) discussed the incidence and aetiology of the most common running injuries.

They found that: - the most common injury by far was to the knee, typically on the anterior aspect (e.g. PFPS- patellofemoral pain syndrome) - risk for injury was much higher once a threshold of 40 miles/week is surpassed - iliotibial band friction syndrome, tibial stress syndrome, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis and meniscal injuries of the knee were also common

So what can you do to reduce your risk of anterior knee pain / PFPS? - ensure you have adequate flexibility and mobility, especially of the quadriceps and hamstrings muscles – stretch!! - have proper ankle and hip mechanics, especially in terms of stability and motor control - load management is important, incrementally build up your running, don’t suddenly start running long distances without preparation - the right footwear is also vital, get a good quality shoe that is designed for runners - your running technique must suit your body – a professional assessment can determine which running style is best for you

This is of course just a quick overview, there is plenty more to be said about all of these topics – so reach out to one of our caring and friendly Infinite Health Team Physio at our Chatswood or North Sydney clinic, we would love to help!

Happy Running!
