After an influx of patients presenting with preventable overuse injuries, we thought we’d make a post about the importance of cross-training (CT).
WHY is it important ?
Glad you asked! CT enables a runner to train aerobic fitness while reducing stress on typical load heavy structures such as the knees, calves and feet. Additionally, CT can be used for return to sport in athletes recovering from injury. CT reduces the impact load while maintaining adequate training volume. Finally, in athletes with chronic cartilage or joint injuries, CT can prolong your running career, and allow you to continue doing what you love for longer.
WHAT is it ?
Essentially, it is athletic training in other sports/activities than your usual sport. For runners, this could mean incorporating cycling, swimming, fitness classes or strength training, in order to supplement their running.
HOW to implement it ?
It's simple, start incorporating 1-2 sessions/week of activities such as cycling, stationary bike, swimming, water running. You can even include trail or grass runs! They can also mirror the athlete’s usual training session - i.e. interval training, aerobic or anaerobic training.
Incorporating CT also has the added benefit of preventing boredom or burnout!
